Hello folks, hope you all are doing well. So here we are starting with a new series ” The Undiscovered Valour from our Indian History”. Under this series we would keep posting the unidentified facts of our Indian History. Today in this Part 1 we would come across the story of Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling.

Jyotirlings, where Bhagwan Shiva is worshipped within the sort of ‘fiery columns of light’, find description in ancient Hindu Scriptures. The jyotirling shrines are places where Siva appeared as columns of sunshine and symbolize his infinite nature. Out of the 64 jyotirlings only 12 jyotirlings are considered to be traditional, most ancient and sacred.

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling temple is located between the Bhramagiri, Nilgiri and Kalagiri hills. The jyotirling has three faces manifesting Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

The Islamic plunderers and rulers destroyed and vandalized thousands of temples across the country. The ancient Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling at Trimbak was demolished by Aurangzeb’s Mughal forces in 1690. The Mughals couldn’t completely destroy the location of Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling as their attempts were foiled by swarm of scorpions, poisonous insects and snakes.

The ancient Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling was resotred and it had been rebuilt by the Peshwas in 1754. The Peshwa, the 8th in succesion, during this point was Balaji Bajirao Bhat, also called Nana Saheb commissioned the building of the marvellous shrine out of basalt.
